The Paalam International School was opened in September 2001 with 20 students aged between 4–8 years. The school now has 102 students and in September 2008 will receive a new intake of a further 20 children. Many of these children have never attended school before or are from families with very low incomes. The objective of the school is to provide children who would not normally have the opportunity to study, with the opportunity to study in 3 languages, English, Tamil & Singhalese, using a Christian curriculum. A secondary objective is to provide training and employment opportunities for local staff Our vision is that by giving these children the opportunity to study they will have opportunities to change their future and the future of their families. We are working with children in the Palliyawatta area, including children from two Shanties. Many of the children in the school are sponsored into the school through the “Paalam Child Sponsorship Programme”. This operates through Links International, UK. The funding helps to pay for the children’s books, uniforms, shoes, and for some children, much needed milk and vitamins.
